Part 1- Chapters 1- 9 Question 25

Anthrax is quite deadly. Why is it referred to as “safer” than Ebola?

3 comments:

  1. Anthrax is a serious infectious disease cause by Bacillus anthracis, spores that live in the soil. When these spores enter the body of animals and people, they are activated into growing cells. These bacteria will multiply in the host, producing toxins in the body which will ultimately cause the host to die (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). Although it is also rather severe, it’s “safer” than Ebola because, unlike the Ebola virus, it can be treated with antibiotics. Antibiotics affect bacteria, not viruses, and viruses are hard to directly treat without harming the host. Ebola is also known to be a dangerous virus because the symptoms don’t appear until 7-8 days after contact with the virus, but the damage is much more serious than that caused by Anthrax and most of the time, the virus kills the host off before it can be treated to minimize the damage.

    1. First post revised:

When these spores enter the body of animals and people, they are activated into growing cells. These bacteria will multiply in the host, producing toxins in the body which will cause symptoms such as fevers, chest discomfort, confusion, nausea and headaches, and ultimately cause the host to die (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). The Ebola virus causes similar symptoms to the host as Anthrax but it also causes organs to disintegrate and liquefy at a faster pace. In addition, antitoxins can eliminate the toxins that are produced by Anthrax in the host’s body.

  2. Anthrax is caused by a bacteria. If it isn't inhalation anthrax then the Anthrax would seem more harmless than Ebola; Anthrax is like Ebola because it takes about 7 days to develop. Inhalation anthrax is the most deadly because it may take weeks for the symptoms to appear; also if it is at an advanced stage antibiotics will be useless. (Mayo Clinic Staff ,2014). Antibiotics cannot destroy toxins released by the Anthrax bacteria, it is antitoxins that destroy toxins (Fishbein 2015). Although Anthrax can have Meningitis and high fevers Ebola is dangerous for making the host bleed though all their orifices (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2014). Ebola is similar to Anthrax because they can both kill the host, but yes Ebola has the most deadliest of symptoms.
